Why Wheelchairs Can Jump

Wheelchairs Can Jump - Armand 'Tip' Thiboutot, PhDTechnically speaking, wheelchair basketball players can jump! It is obvious they can’t shoot jump shots or play above the rim, but they can defy gravity in ingenious ways, however minute those actions may be, in order to improve performance during the game. Wheelchair basketball players have become so highly conditioned and creative that they now tilt on one wheel to shoot a fade-away shot. Some have even hit shots a split second before tilting so far that they hit the floor before their shot settles into the net. In fact, tilting and jumping of wheelchairs have become so prevalent that rules have been written to specify the type of tilting and jumping that is allowed on court.

This book is designed to fill a long-standing void for people who have only a superficial knowledge and understanding of the existence of elite wheelchair basketball performance and its importance in the lives of its participants. It brings to life the rich 65-plus-year history as played out in the two most prestigious competitions organized for the sports’ men and women athletes—the quadrennial Paralympic Games and Gold Cup World Championships. Each of these competitions is recaptured in statistical and descriptive detail to establish a historical record that informs readers of the breadth and scope of the sport. Each chapter identifies the teams and their players, the results of all games, and the drama involved in the playdown to the championship.

Moreover, this book personalizes the participants, past and present, through an extensive glossary of names, which cites their outstanding achievements in the sport. This compilation of names is the first of its kind in the realm of sports for individuals with disabilities. It is a simple truism that no game or activity becomes a sport until it has acquired a documented history. Wheelchair basketball, as depicted in this historical account of its competitions and its players, has definitely achieved that status.

The book also contains numerous diagrams and illustrations to assist the reader in a deeper understanding of the finer points of play. Photographs of many of the key players – on and off the court – are showcased throughout the book offering a fitting tribute to some of the most influential people who helped define the sport as it is played today. The superb athletes who play at the elite level of wheelchair basketball are heroes for many reasons. Wheelchairs Can Jump! chronicles the development of what the world has come to know as one of the most exciting Olympic–level sports, for both fans and participants, played with the same intensity and extraordinary skill as other internationally organized team competitions.
